Empowerment
SIDUR as part of its development work took
up rehabilitation of bonded labourers in the sector of textiles
and handlooms. The rehabilitation measures included supply of
yarn To the weavers enabling them to produce their own material
and sell the weaved material directly to the purchases. This programme
was started in 1997 and ended in 2002 in Chirala, 250kms from
Hyderabad.
The entire project was executed in the area of
a 11 acre land has become the model township. 300 families of
weavers were identified who were leading a semi-bonded life with
the master weavers. The next step was to build them house cum
work sheds totaling 200 houses, another 100 such sheds were built
by the people themselves with the required help from SIDUR trading
was channelised and two cooperatives societies were also set up.
